100 Foot Chain

Purchased from the estate of Mrs. Elizabeth Cautley (1991) - believed to have been owned by Reginald Cautley, ALS.

The use of the chain to measure distances dates back at least 300 years. The term "chain" as a unit of measure equals 66 feet. This particular length of chain consists of 100 links, each one foot in length. The steel tape replaced the chain as the surveyor's measuring device.
