George Webber
Mr.
George Webber was born on July 12th, 1902 at Manitou, Manitoba.
He
obtained his DLS commission in
1927,
his MLS in
1928,
SLS in
1939
and ALS in
1951.
Mr.
Webber served in the Royal Canadian Engineers in Great Britain,
Belgium, Holland and Germany during the period
1941
to
1945,
being discharged with the rank of captain.
He spent
a considerable part of his surveying career in Northern Manitoba
on mining claim surveys, underground surveys for Lynn Lake
Mines, and control traverse surveys in the Central Manitoba
Mining District in
1931.
Some of
his experiences on this work are included in a paper he prepared
for the Canadian Surveyor titled appropriately "Mineral Claim
Surveys." Another paper reflective of his Northern experiences
was "Journey from The Pas to Rankin Inlet." Mr. Webber also did
municipal surveying and engineering.
In
January
1952,
Mr. Webber was appointed Examiner of Surveys in the Winnipeg
Land Titles Office, succeeding Mr. W.B. Young, who had just
retired. He continued in this position until his retirement in
1965.
It was
during this period of George Webber's career that he became well
known to the membership of the Association of Manitoba Land
Surveyors.
His
helping hand to junior surveyors, who were getting to learn the
ropes in achieving their plan registrations, as well as to more
experienced surveyors, was a trademark of George Webber, the
Examiner of Surveys. It can certainly be said that he was a
no-nonsense administrator, but the esteem in which he was held
by all members, was clearly displayed at the retirement party
held in
1965
to honour his considerable contribution to surveying in
Manitoba.
His
service to the Association of Manitoba Land Surveyors included
member of the Executive Council in
1951,
1952,
1957,
1958
and
1959,
vice-president in
1932
and
1948
and President in
1949.
George
Webber passed away January 19,
1985.
