T.O. (Ted) Neumann
Theodore Oscar Neumann, a long-standing member of the Alberta Land Surveyors' Association passed away
in Calgary on Friday, October 22,
1993
at the age of 76 years.
Ted, as he was affectionately known by his friends and business
associates, was born in the Pincher Creek area and received his early
education in that area. Following his graduation from high school, Ted
attended the University of Alberta where he graduated with a B.Sc. in
Mining Engineering in
1941.
Following graduation from University, Ted was involved as an
instrumentman from
1941 to
1946 on airport
construction for the Department of Transport in Lethbridge. In
1947,
Ted left the Department of Transport and joined Mannix Construction
Company in Calgary as an Engineer. He was with Mannix Construction
Company for approximately a year-and-a-half when he undertook a position
in the Cadomin Coal Company in Cadomin as Chief Surveyor and Mine
Surveyor. Ted stayed with the coal company until November
1950
when he joined the Canadian Western National Gas Company in Calgary.
During his employment with the gas company, Ted heard the call for more
land surveyors in the province because of the boom in the oil industry
and attended the short course on land surveying at the Banff Survey
School in 1952
and was certified as an Alberta Land Surveyor on August 18,
1952.
In 1957,
Ted left Calgary for North Vancouver where he was employed with Inland
Natural Gas Co. Ltd. as an operating engineer. After four years in North
Vancouver, he moved to Penticton, then a year later, in
1962,
a move was made to Edmonton to be with the Canadian Western Natural Gas
Co. In 1978,
Ted became an employee of C.U. Engineering, where he remained until
1985
when he phased himself into retirement in Calgary.
- Most of Ted's engineering and land
surveying career which spanned about forty-five years, was spent
in the natural gas industry.
Ted came by his interest in land surveying quite honestly as his
wife, Eileen, of fifty-one years was the daughter of one of the
old-time land surveyors-F.J.
Heuperman, DLS, ALS
Ted was a professional engineer, in the Association of
Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta
and the Professional Engineers of British Columbia, an Alberta
Mine Surveyor, and an Alberta Land Surveyor. He was a member of
the Alberta Land Surveyors' Association Council from
1953
to 1956,
the Masonic Lodge, the Shriners, APEGGA's editorial and awards
committee, and the United Church of Canada.
Ted will be sadly missed by his wife, Eileen, daughters Carol
and Donna, grandchildren, relatives, and friends from the
natural gas industry and the engineering and land surveying
professions.
