George
Waters MacLeod
George Waters MacLeod was
registered as an Alberta Land Surveyor on June 24,
1912
and served as president of the Alberta Land Surveyors’ Association in
1920.
He was a graduate of the University of Toronto and practiced his
profession in Edmonton.
Lieutenant-Colonel MacLeod was an organizing officer of the 49th
Battalion which was organized in January
1915.
“A man of commanding personality he earned the respect of officers and
men alike.” Lt-Col. MacLeod earned the Distinguished Service Order.
His brother, David Douglas MacLeod,
qualified as an Alberta Land Surveyor but was killed in the war before
obtaining his commission.
After the war, Lt-Col. MacLeod commanded the 1st Battalion Edmonton
Regiment and, in 1932, was appointed to the penitentiary service, being warden at
Prince Albert penitentiary and later of Stony Mountain, Winnipeg. “In
the three years he served the Dominion as a warden in federal
penitentiaries, he rapidly established himself as a competent
administrator and disciplinarian.”
George Waters MacLeod died on July 15,
1937.
