Milij Lukomskyj

 

Milij Lukomskyj passed away on February 6, 1998 at the age of 93 years. Mr. Lukomskyj came to Canada from the Ukraine in 1949, and in 1950 entered into articles for his commission as an Alberta Land Surveyor under Carl Lester, ALS.

He received his commission as a Dominion Land Surveyor on April 5, 1951 and as an Alberta Land Surveyor on June 8, 1951. He was also a Saskatchewan Land Surveyor.

Mr. Lukomskyj remained with the Department of Highways for a year, went into partnership, first with Mel Erfle, ALS in an early photogrammetric venture, and then with J.B. Underwood, ALS for two years, establishing his own practice as M. Lukomskyj, ALS a firm which he maintained until 1988 when he retired.

Prior to coming to Canada, Mr. Lukomskyj studied forestry and survey engineering in Lviv, Poland (now Ukraine) where he graduated in 1934 with a diploma and title of surveying engineer.

Subsequent to articling for two years and passing the professional examinations, he was sworn in as a registered surveyor. He practiced for four years in agrarian reform and construction of hydro works. In 1944 he was an assistant professor of Forestry School in Lviv, and in 1945-1946 he was a lecturer of surveying at Heidenau, Germany.

Mr. Lukomskyj was a precise man with an obvious love of mathematics as is evidenced by his high marks on his DLS examinations. He will be remembered by members of the Alberta Land Surveyors' Association as a gentle man.

In his biographical information submitted in 1984, he lists his hobbies as gardening, historical research, and church singing-hobbies befitting of such a kind and pleasant person.
