A.D. Griffin

Albert Dyke Griffin was born December 14th, 1855, at Watertown, Ontario. He was a son of James K. Griffin and his wife Ahnira Dyke. And his grandparents were Ebenezer Griffin and his wife Eliza Kent. Ebenezer was a son of Smith Griffin, who was a United Empire Loyalist. In the official list of Loyalists we find Charles Griffin, soldier in Jessup's Corp.; Joseph Griffin, a soldier in Jessup's Corp.; and Isaac Griffin, also a soldier in Jessup's Corp. No doubt Smith Griffin came to Upper Canada following the American Revolution.

The subject of this sketch was educated at Watertown High School, at Toronto University for one year and received a B.A. from Queen's University.

In 1882, he married Ida Cameron at Oakwood, Ontario. He was Mathematical Master of Woodstock Collegiate Institute from 1882 until 1904. He was articled to W.M. Davis, OLS of Woodstock, and on November 11th, 1890, was commissioned as an OLS.

His professional activities: land surveying in Oxford and Elgin counties; mine and mining claims surveys in the Cobalt and Gowganda districts; manager of Senator Mill Manufacturing Co., Galt, four years; with C.D. Howe and Co., consulting engineering, Port Arthur, two years.

He made many surveys for the Ontario and the Dominion Government and did numerous township subdivisions and miscellaneous surveys in Ontario, and some township subdivisions for the Dominion Government in Alberta.
