Griffin
Albert Dyke Griffin was born December 14th, 1855, at Watertown, Ontario. He was
a son of James K. Griffin and his wife Ahnira Dyke. And his grandparents were
Ebenezer Griffin and his wife Eliza Kent. Ebenezer was a son of Smith Griffin,
who was a United Empire Loyalist. In the official list of Loyalists we find
Charles Griffin, soldier in Jessup's Corp.; Joseph Griffin, a soldier in
Jessup's Corp.; and Isaac Griffin, also a soldier in Jessup's Corp. No doubt
Smith Griffin came to Upper Canada following the American Revolution.
The subject of this
sketch was educated at Watertown High School, at Toronto University for one
year and received a B.A. from Queen's University.
In 1882, he married Ida
Cameron at Oakwood, Ontario. He was Mathematical Master of Woodstock Collegiate
Institute from 1882 until 1904. He was articled to W.M. Davis, OLS of
Woodstock, and on November 11th, 1890, was commissioned as an OLS.
His professional
activities: land surveying in Oxford and Elgin counties; mine and mining claims
surveys in the Cobalt and Gowganda districts; manager of Senator Mill
Manufacturing Co., Galt, four years; with C.D. Howe and Co., consulting
engineering, Port Arthur, two years.
He made many surveys for
the Ontario and the Dominion Government and did numerous township subdivisions and
miscellaneous surveys in Ontario, and some township subdivisions for the
Dominion Government in Alberta.
