Hugh Duffield
Hugh J. Duffield, for many years a land surveyor and civil engineer in
Calgary died in a local hospital this morning (July 25,
1942) after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Duffield was born in Ireland. He attended Queen's College, Belfast,
and the University of Dublin, where he graduated with an
engineering degree. For a time he was employed as an engineer on
railway construction in South Africa and later in the Argentine.

He came to Calgary in
1917 and during his 25
years of residence here, he was continuously interested in civic
affairs and development. He was a prolific contributor to
"Letter to the Editor" columns of both daily newspapers and was
one of the city council's severest critics over a period of
years. He was one of the first to seek, election to the city
council as an independent but was unsuccessful.

Mr. Duffield was unmarried, He was survived by two sisters, Miss Margaret
and Miss Jane Duffield, both of Vancouver, and a brother,
Samuel, in the Isle of Wight.
