Challenger Geomatics Ltd.
(By
Brian Munday, on
the occasion of the presentation of the Geomatics Award of Excellence to
Challenger Geomatics Ltd.)
In
2000,
the Alberta Land Surveyors' Association established the Geomatics Award
of Excellence to recognize innovation and excellence in geomatics.
Winners must have contributed to the advancement of geomatics in one of
the following areas: use of technology, new methods or procedures, new
software, innovation and invention, or anything else unique to the field
of geomatics.
I am pleased to announce that Challenger Geomatics Ltd. is the recipient
of the Alberta Land Surveyors' Association's first Geomatics Award of
Excellence. Challenger Geomatics Ltd. is being recognized for its Bench
Manager Project. The company has been working on the development of a
GPS aided navigation system for heavy equipment since
1994.
During the last three years, Challenger's machinery guidance system
division has developed crane collision avoidance, bulldozer, aircraft
and offshore positioning systems.
This division has been working on development of GPS based navigation
systems for heavy equipment in the mining industry. Challenger's joint
venture with a company called Winco has produced Bench Manager, a suite
of software tools used on shovels, bulldozers and front-end loaders in
open pit mines. Bench Manager is designed as a tool for shovel, loader,
and dozer operators providing bench elevation monitoring or quality
control.
Currently, the Bench Manager system is operating in a bauxite mine in
Surinam and is being installed at a mine in Botswana with further
installations pending in Russia and South America.
