W.M. Carthew

 

Lieutenant William Morden Carthew was born at the Rectory, Hopton Wafers, in the County of Shropshire, England, on October 19th, 1886, and was educated at St. Edmunds School, Canterbury.

He came to Canada in January,
1905, and settled in Edmonton, Alberta, where he took up land surveying as a profession.

He obtained his commission as a Dominion Land Surveyor in
1910 and as an Alberta Land Surveyor in 1911, and practiced his profession as a member of the firm of Cautley and Carthew in Edmonton.

He enlisted in January,
1915, and was given a commission as lieutenant in the 49th Battalion, with which he went overseas.

He was killed in action at Ypres on June 2nd,
1916.

The late Lieutenant Carthew had a brother, Mr. J.T. Carthew, who saw a great deal of active service with the Coldstream Guards, and who was also a member of the Association.
