Peter
Baptie
With regret I must
report that Mr. Peter B. Baptie, ALS, DLS and life member of our
association passed away February 19,
1981.
He was born on
February 8, 1898 at Lakefield, Ontario, came west in
1913
and grew up in Calgary.

Mr. Baptie began his
survey career in
1925
on mountain photographical surveys for the federal government and continued
with them until
1930.
He completed the DLS preliminary examinations in
1930
but was unable to find survey work for four years.

From
1934
to 1936
he articled to Mr. L.E. Harris, ALS, DLS

Mr. Baptie was
commissioned as a Dominion Land Surveyor in
1941
and as an Alberta Land Surveyor June 3,
1942.

He was employed by
Imperial Oil
1942
to 1947
at Turner Valley. He entered private practice in Calgary
1948
to 1949
and during this time surveyed a new addition to Waterton Lakes Natural Park
and a boundary retracement of Elk Island National Park.

From
1949
until 1963
he was employed as a district surveyor with the Department of Highways,
provincial government, on road surveys in Southern Alberta.

He then returned to
private practice in Calgary and was active surveying until a few months
before his death.

Mr. Baptie was
appointed a life member of our Association April 28,
1977.
He and his family were very proud of this appointment.

Mr. Baptie was
married July 17,
1942.
He was a member of the First Alliance Church and was active in the Gideon
Association.

Those of us who
worked for Peter and were associated with him will remember his likeable
personality and good humor. I remember several times in the field when he
got us out of difficult situations with a joke and a smile. Peter enjoyed
his time on this earth and was a credit to our Association.

He will live long in
the memories of us who knew him.
