1997 - High on Energy

Bill Dabbs reported that the Vision 2000 committee was progressing nicely and should be in a position to report their conclusions by the next Annual General Meeting. It was announced that Dr. Ballantyne was the cadastral professor at the University of Calgary. Mr. Dabbs also took time to note 11 people had registered as Associate Members and that the number of articled students had almost doubled over the last year. At this Annual Meeting, Mr. Dabbs announced that Brenwyn Cooley had resigned as Executive Director and that Director of Systematic Practice Review, Al Nelson, had given his notice.

In 1997, the Association held a High On Energy GIS/GPS symposium in Calgary at the Convention Centre. This symposium brought in several high-profile speakers including representatives from Microsoft and the International Federation of Surveyors but, in the end, the attendance was disappointing. The Association had hoped to attract a number of people in the energy sector but the industry was extremely busy at that time of year. 1997 was a record year with respect to iron post/marker sales. The Association sold 178,520 iron posts and 48,240 marker posts in 1997.
