1993 - The
Implementation Stage
President Bob Baker
told the membership that the
1992-1993 year was filled with many challenges as the
Association moved towards implementing the various action steps outlined in the
strategic plan. He recognized that some action items were implemented with
seemingly little effort while others required considerable attention just to
define the first step. Mr. Baker
indicated that the number one priority of the implementation stage of the
strategic planning process was the streamlining of the governance function
through better volunteer training and better communication among committees,
boards, council and administration.
This led to the establishment of a Steering Committee
chaired, initially, by Grant Hammond of Hammond Consulting. Eventually, each
committee would have specific terms of reference against which it would be
evaluated. Council stopped doing committee work which allowed it to focus on
long-term strategic issues.
- The role of the Practice Review Board changed as a result of the implementation
of the strategic plan. Following a review of the plan examination and field
inspection program that had been in place since
1988, it was agreed that this
process was not providing the results that the members and the public were
expecting. To this end, the Practice Review Board placed a proposal before
Council which contemplated a comprehensive systematic practice review program.
The Public Relations Committee became more active and, with Council’s support,
retained the services of a public relations firm (Rose Country Communications
Ltd. of Edmonton) to assist it in developing a five-year public relations and
marketing plan. The plan was designed to assess current communication materials,
develop a marketing strategy for each of the target groups and develop specific
communication materials for each target group.
