1984 - It's All Under Review

President Dick Bassil, in his address to the 1984 Annual General Meeting, indicated that procurement policies, bidding practices, contract arrangements and fee schedules were all under review. Responding to the request from the 1983 Annual General Meeting for a mandatory fee schedule, and having considered the legislation and provisions of the Federal Combines Investigation Act, Council chose to initiate a fee schedule as a guideline only. The fee schedule prompted mixed reaction from the members and the public. Some members considered the numbers too high while others found them acceptable and acknowledged them as a guideline. The public expressed some concern, particularly where fees had increased significantly. The Minister made it clear that unless the Association could clearly demonstrate why it should be exempt from the provisions of the combines legislation, and why a mandatory fee schedule was in the best interest of the public, he would be reluctant to sponsor an amendment to the professional legislation.

In other matters, the Association recorded over 300 active Alberta Land Surveyors for the first time in its history in spite of the continuing slow economy. The Association also reduced annual membership fees by $100. The reduction was largely possible by virtue of the registration of some 90 surveyors’ corporations and partnerships.
