1967 - Profound
Advances
1967 would prove to
be Jack Holloway's last year as Secretary-Treasurer and Registrar. During the
1966-1967 year, the Association established an office that not only housed its
records but also provided an office for the Secretary-Treasurer. The office
served as a meeting place for Council and committees and provided for space for
the start of an Association library. Through the efforts of the Education
Committee and the co-operation of the Alberta Department of Education, a second
course for survey technicians in Alberta was offered at NAIT in Edmonton.
President Rippon acknowledged the profound advances being made in the electronic
and electro-optical measuring devices, electronic computers and the endless
possibilities of automation in photogrammetry. “If the surveyor is to take
charge of these complex and specialized operations, he will require a thorough
basic training in science and a broad education in surveying subjects in order
to cope with the problems of the future.” With this in mind,
President Rippon
admitted that the education of the land surveyor in Alberta needs to change.
